Field research in a Malaysian market

What Sets Us Apart

Research done on the ground
reads differently from research
done at a desk.

The advantages of working with Lumvor Partners are, in most cases, inseparable from the method — patient fieldwork, careful writing, and a practice small enough to hold its standards.

— Core Advantages

Six things worth knowing

In-person fieldwork, always

No interview in any of our studies is conducted by phone, video call, or survey form. We go to the places where the participants are and speak with them directly.

Deliverables worth reading

We write complete studies rather than bullet-point summaries. The writing is intended to communicate what we found clearly enough for a reader who was not in the room with us.

East Malaysia familiarity

We are based in Kuching and have worked extensively in Sarawak and Sabah. The commercial culture, trade networks, and community dynamics of East Malaysia are not foreign territory for us.

Strict client confidentiality

We do not reference one client's engagement to inform another's. Findings remain within the practice and within your organisation.

Same team throughout

The people you meet at the start of an engagement are the people who conduct the interviews and write the study. There are no handoffs to junior staff after the agreement is signed.

Transparent, fixed fees

Our fees are stated at the outset and do not change unless scope changes. There are no hourly billing surprises, no hidden disbursements, and no retainer arrangements.

— In Depth

What each advantage means in practice

Professional Expertise

Experienced in qualitative market research

Our team has conducted primary field research in Malaysia for a combined total of more than fifteen years. That experience shapes how we design interview guides, how we select participants, how we probe for what participants are not saying directly, and how we make sense of observations that seem contradictory at first.

  • Experienced in designing qualitative interview frameworks
  • Multilingual field capacity (Malay, Mandarin, Iban, English)
  • Deep familiarity with Sarawak and Sabah commercial environments

Process & Method

A method that has been refined over many engagements

Our working process is structured but not rigid. Each engagement begins with a scoping session in which we agree on the specific question to be investigated, the participant type, and what a useful output would look like for your situation. We check in at the midpoint to share early observations and adjust if necessary. The final study is delivered in a session where we walk through it together and answer questions.

  • Structured scoping at the outset — no assumptions carried in
  • Midpoint review to adjust focus if early findings suggest it
  • Final delivery session with discussion, not just document handover

Value & Pricing

Fees that reflect the scope, not the client's budget

Our fees are fixed per engagement type: RM 720 for a Field Note, RM 2,000 for a Customer Listening engagement, and RM 3,120 for a Market Field Study. These fees do not adjust upward based on the size of your organisation or the strategic significance of the question. They reflect the work, and the work is the same regardless of who commissions it.

  • Fixed fees stated before engagement begins
  • No hourly billing, no retainer model
  • Start small with a Field Note if you want to test the engagement first

Outcomes

Studies written to support decision-making, not to impress

The test we apply to everything we write is simple: does this help the reader form a view and decide what to do? We try to be clear about what we observed, what we infer from those observations, and where uncertainty remains. We do not pad findings to justify the fee or soften conclusions to avoid discomfort.

  • Findings presented plainly, including inconvenient ones
  • Distinction made between observation, inference, and uncertainty
  • Written for a reader who was not present during the fieldwork

— What Makes Us Different

Distinctions that matter

Multilingual field capacity in Sarawak

Our team conducts interviews in Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, and Iban. This extends the range of participants we can reach and reduces the filtering effect that comes when research relies entirely on English-language conversation.

No promotional output from our research

We do not produce testimonials, case study marketing, or promotional content from customer conversations. What participants say stays in the written study — not in our own marketing materials.

Field Note as a low-commitment entry point

The Field Note format at RM 720 is a genuine service rather than a loss-leader. Several clients have used it as a standalone engagement to test a specific assumption — not as a prelude to a larger study.

Paced timelines, not rushed ones

We do not compress fieldwork to accommodate a client's internal reporting calendar. If a study needs twelve weeks, it takes twelve weeks. We are transparent about this from the start and will not take an engagement we cannot deliver well.
