About the Practice

Market understanding gathered slowly, on foot.

Lumvor Partners is a small practice based in Kuching, Sarawak. We conduct primary field research for firms in Malaysia that need to understand a market before they commit to it.

— Our Story

How we came to work this way

Lumvor Partners began in Kuching because of a particular dissatisfaction — not with consulting as a field, but with how market questions were typically answered. Reports drawn from databases and aggregated industry surveys were presented as understanding. They were not. They were proxies, often expensive ones, for the thing a firm actually needed: a careful account of what was happening on the ground.

We started by doing something simpler. We went to the places in question. We sat with merchants, distributors, buyers, and operators. We listened to what they said, noted what they did not say, and wrote it down plainly. We found that firms who received this kind of account — unhurried, specific, conducted in person — made better decisions than those who received slides assembled from second-hand sources.

That remains the practice. It has not changed because it does not need to. The work is time-consuming by design. A Market Field Study takes twelve to fourteen weeks because twenty to thirty interviews, properly conducted, cannot be done faster without losing the quality that makes them useful. A Field Note takes three weeks because five to seven interviews, even focused ones, require enough time to find the right participants and give them the space to speak.

We are based in Wisma Saberkas in Kuching and have conducted fieldwork in Sarawak, Sabah, and across peninsular Malaysia. We are a small team and intend to stay that way. Smaller means that the people who agree to an engagement are the people who do the work — not a bait-and-switch arrangement common in larger practices.

Our Mission

"To help firms understand markets as they actually are — not as models suggest they should be — through patient fieldwork, honest writing, and the discipline of noting what we observe rather than what we expect."

— The People

Who does the work

RH

Rashid Hamid

Principal, Field Research

Rashid leads most market field studies and has conducted interviews across Sarawak and Sabah for the better part of a decade. He is particularly attuned to distributive trade and regional supply structures.

LW

Lim Wei Shan

Research Lead, Written Studies

Wei Shan conducts customer listening engagements and writes the majority of our final studies. She trained in qualitative research methods and worked in consumer insight before joining Lumvor Partners.

NA

Nadia Azri

Associate, Field Interviews

Nadia supports field interviews and manages participant coordination across Sarawak. She speaks Iban, Malay, and Mandarin, which extends the range of communities we can reach directly.

— How We Work

Our research standards

Primary research only

We do not aggregate secondary sources and present them as insight. Every finding in our written studies rests on a conversation we conducted or an observation we made ourselves.

Participant confidentiality

Interview participants are never identified in written outputs without explicit consent. We describe what was said, not who said it, unless the participant has agreed otherwise.

Written for decision-making

Our studies are structured to help a reader form a view and act on it. We try to distinguish between what we observed, what we infer, and what remains uncertain.

Client data protection

Engagement details, strategic context shared by clients, and the content of our studies are held strictly within the practice and not referenced in other work.

Scope agreed in advance

Before any field work begins, we align on the specific question to be investigated, the participant profile, and what a useful output looks like. Scope changes require discussion and may affect timeline and fees.

Open working sessions

We include working sessions at key points in each engagement to share interim observations, adjust focus if needed, and ensure the final study addresses what you are actually trying to understand.

— Expertise

Market research in Sarawak and Malaysia

Business consulting in Malaysia involves a particular kind of geographic complexity. The peninsula and Borneo are not the same market, and Sarawak and Sabah are not interchangeable simply because they share an island. Lumvor Partners conducts field research with awareness of these distinctions — we know Kuching's commercial character, understand the patterns of trade in Sibu and Miri, and have worked in communities where Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, and Iban are all part of a single conversation.

Our market field studies are suited to firms considering entry into a new segment — a different customer type, a different geography within Malaysia, or a category they have historically observed from the outside. The engagements are structured to answer specific questions rather than produce a general market overview. A firm asking whether there is a sustainable customer base for a particular kind of service in the interior of Sarawak will receive a different kind of study from one asking why its existing customers in Kuching seem less engaged than they once were.

Customer listening work is particularly well suited to firms that have been operating for some time and suspect that their understanding of their customers has drifted from reality. The conversations we conduct are not satisfaction surveys. They are structured listening sessions designed to surface the kinds of things customers rarely say directly — the hesitations, the workarounds, the comparisons they make privately.

The Field Note format was developed to address a specific situation: a founder or senior manager has a particular question and needs a considered answer before deciding whether a larger study is warranted. At RM 720 over three weeks, it is a measured way to test a market assumption without committing the resources a fuller engagement requires.
